Articulation: Language, Object, Space

Language, like all of us, has had to adapt rapidly and repeatedly in recent times. This exhibition which I curated with designers Roz and Chris de Waal McKenzie, explored the transformative shift in language, particularly examining how designers and artists have responded to these changes in the creation and design of space and objects.

It investigated the intricate interplay between language and its impact on the contemporary cultural, social, and political aspects of our environment and artifacts.

To explore these questions the exhibition  used a historical lens, focusing on three Greek concepts—'Logos', 'Graphe', and 'Rhema'— delving into the intricate relationship between spoken, written, and transformational words.

Artists and designers were invited to respond, each contributing to the overarching dialogue between the tangible and intangible, spoken and silent, and abstract and concrete works on display in the current context of their practices.

Works developed for the exhibition touched on the impact of AI and language models on practice; the 'language of the image' to think and communicate with; projected color-coded texts; sound works; concrete poetry; and works exploring the etymology of language and words significant to an artist’s practice.
